I came from a long way off

I came from a long way off
and I hadn’t had a clue
I didn’t know which way to go
and what will become of me and you

the trip up to here was arduous
but I got thru it tho’
now I don’t remember what I came for
and why I’m lying ‘round so … lethargic

the earth ‘round here is dry
and the sun beats down its monotonuous way
there’s boring stuff on the program
and nobody’s recording no more the calendar day

over there must start the oasis
where the eldorado is supposed to begin
but nobody can look over the hills
that wall us in

now some dogs are barkin’
and women cross the camp square with water bowls
they watch out that not a drop slops over
and we pull our hats further down

now we’re waitin’ for somebody
who’ll sign us up and out
cause he needs some tough guys
to get the gold out of a distant town

so we’re set off for this madness trip
where the odds are twenty to tern
but now it’s all the same
it’s really all the same
